The Chimp Paradox: Manage your chimp
The Chimp Paradox
The Chimp Paradox
A book titled “The Chimp Paradox” by Professor Steve Peters, renowned consultant and psychiatrist, talks about different parts of our brains that influence our thinking, responses and behaviors. Those parts include the computer, the human, and the chimp. The chimp part reacts and responses with emotions and instincts, which are important for living in the jungles; but might not always be useful for modern society. The human part reacts and responses with logical reasoning supported by fact, data and information. The computer part stores data about our identity, and responses made by the human and the chimp. Thus, the computer is influenced by, and influences, the responses of the human and the chimp.
The human and the chimp are two separate thinking machines; however, the chimp tends to take control because it acts faster and is stronger than human. We cannot totally get rid of the chimp. So we need to manage it. The book mentions some strategies to manage the chimp so that we can live happily and become more successful.
The Chimp Paradox is a useful tool and mind training for people with chronic stress. Also it is can be used to develop leadership and thinking process of modern leaders. A company asked their employees who are interested to join their new leadership development programme to write a reflection on this book, and on how the Chimp Paradox can be used by modern leaders. Vittawat Dolbandarnchoke (Win) one of the candidates, who finally got selected to join the programme, wrote the following reflection and his interpretation of the message from the book.
Reflection on the book by Vittawat Dolbandarnchoke: Application of The Chimp Paradox to leadership
I particularly found the three-step method mentioned in the Chimp Paradox useful to transform myself to be a modern-day leader. However, I have adjusted the three-step chimp management – Exercise, Box, and Banana – to fit my belief about managing myself and other people. Inspired by the book, my three steps or R’s for managing myself and other are Recognise, Reason, and Reward. I strongly believe that these three steps are crucial for modern-day leaders, who need to deal with great diversity in organisations.
In today’s world, organisations are more diverse than ever, as they comprise of workforces with different backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles, and mindsets. As the structure of organisations and their personnel are changing at a very fast pace, the definition of being a leader, in my opinion, must keep up with such dynamics. A bureaucratic management, which was effective in the older days, may not be suitable for the current organisation forms and new generation of workforce. Leaders, therefore, need to be more understanding of the needs of their subordinates, while discard the rank and superior authority that segregate them from the team.
Recognise
The first step, Recognise, is fundamental and crucial to deal with such diversity and change, as it allows me to be aware about the chimp inside myself and others, which make use distinct as individuals. Recognising the chimp implies listening and understanding the chimp side of myself and other people so that I can capture (if any) fears, concerns, or discouragements, and emotional issues. This helps me gain different perspectives of the situation that are unique to each individual. It is important to take these into account in self-management and managing other people so that I do not make immediate judgements and rash comments that can cause unnecessary conflicts.
Reason
After recognising the chimp and give it a chance to speak out, now it is the time for Reason to play a role. The aim of the Reason stage is for me to logically assess the situation and attempt to calm the chimp using facts, reasons, and solutions to the issues. This is the most difficult stage as I need to make sure the chimp is completely calm before moving to the next stage. Lastly, Reward will encourage my chimp and other chimps around me to deviate their focus from all emotional negativities, and to give them goals and rewards to work towards to.
Reward
Furthermore, the promise of rewards will instigate belief and positive values; and can be translated as a reassurance of stability and forward progress of the party giving out the rewards. I believe that theses three-steps method provide a reflective framework and flexibility for me, as a future leader, to manage myself and other people in diverse and dynamic environment. I also strongly believe that it is time for us to reconceptualise the role of leaders to be more of a leader that understand the team, and willing to recognise and accommodate changes in today’s management of an organisation.
Additional skills for leadership
The Chimp Paradox has shown an importance of recognising the chimp, and managing them. Those who are able to keep their chimp and others in control can often lead the group towards the success they are aiming for. Therefore, I think it is important for good leaders to be willing to manage the chimp within and around them, not ignoring the chimp.
This attitude closely relates to the following characteristic and behaviour I believe are necessary for the ideal leaders. Strong communication skills play a crucial role in management as a mean to establish a connection with the leaders and their workforce. Being approachable leaders and listen to people around them will allow the leaders to recognise different needs and perspectives to fully assess the situations. Dictating and narrow-minded bosses can sometimes distant themselves from some types of people. These bosses usually manage by commands, not by communicating. This communication suppression can lead to many negativities and unwanted effects within the team.
Moreover, good leaders should lead by example. It is often the most effective method to translate organisational and personal values and belief to others. For example, subordinates who see their leaders put in that ‘extra mile’ to finish the project, or the dedication to deliver the best are likely to receive the message, and encourage them to do the same.
